What I learned hot air ballooning over the Nevada dessert

What I learned hot air ballooning over the Nevada dessertWhat I learned hot air ballooning over the Nevada dessertIt welches just aftersunriseon the morning of theGreat Reno Balloon Race.Thelargest free hot air balloon festival in the worlddraws a crowd of 120,000to northern Nevada every year at the beginning of September. The nights darknesswelches only just fading as I waited bythe basket of ahot air balloonin the middle of the Nevada desert. The balloonlaylank in the dirt as swarms of children and teenagers approached, asking for trading cards. Apparently the kids here collect them every year, but I didnt know what they were talking about - I hadnt even seen the shape of that hot air balloon slack on the ground, though I welches informed it was a flying squirrel.More and more local kids approached me for a card. Theyd been racing from one moored balloon to the next, looking for a small memento. Discovering I wasnt quite the ballooning expert, they loitered, looking at me with env y and awe. How did you get to ride in one of those? Ive always wanted to go up in the skyObserving every year from below, they might never ride in a balloon, but today I was going up and away from the festival crowds.Theres something inherently romantic about a hot air balloon - something nostalgic, wistful and vaguely unreasonable. That morning, I arrived at the event at 4am, only to be scolded by one of the aeronaut volunteers. He couldnt fathom how I could arrive so late What are you thinking, woman? The rest of the crowd had assembled before 330am, waiting for the Glow Show, when the balloons would light up against the night sky, then the Dawn Patrol, when a very select few would start to rise into the morning chill. Watching the Dawn Patrol from below, the whole enterprise looked terrifying the open fire, the perilous balloon. Now, I was about to ascend. If we dont take off now, well never make it up in the air the captain, Mark, shouted towards one of the aeronauts. Chaos swir led around me as the captain got the go-ahead to fire up his balloon, and I felt a flash of warmth as he sparked the lighter on the fire. The unpredictable wind was waning as the balloon, still on the ground, started filling with air. We rose in a swirl of dust and sand, and I watched as the kids and teenagers and grandparents alike looked up from below.Of course, the conditions above the ground were concerning - when is itnotconcerning to propel yourself up into the sky in a basket beneath a shroud of hot air? I watched as the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas slowly came to my eye level, then looked around at close to ahundred other balloons around us in the sky. They were jarringly vibrant against the muted landscape dirt and sky, endless faded shades of light brown and blue. My friend and I huddled in the basket alongside Mark, a confident, handsome man who only added to the fantastical feeling of our endeavor. Hed trained to be a pilot, and he sounded (and looked) like one too, with a deep voice and a sure demeanor. But,he told us, there werent many jobs in flying airplanes, so he went to Florida, where he saw his first hot air balloon floating overhead. No one was really flying balloons in those days, but Mark was transfixed by that sight in the sky.Right then is when I knew what I would do. I decided,Im going to fly a balloon, have a lot of fun, and get rich. He fired up the burners to give us more lift. Ive had a lot of fun. When I asked if the Great Reno Balloon Race was his favorite, Mark nodded as he thought and looked out again toward the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. Just to the west, over one of the mountain ranges,Lake Tahoeawaited. Its world of deep blue water and tall green trees felt impossibly far away, though it was less than a 40-minute drive. While Markwas competing to drop a flag on a certain mark in the distance, the money or the competition seemed beside the point. It is, he decided. Its a nice ride. The sky was cloudless and pale again st the beige foothills of the mountains, the landscape of the Southwest notable for its starkness. The scores of balloons in the sky popped against the two-toned backdrop of the Nevada sky, their bright colors offsetting the starkness of the desert. urcaptain couldnt exactly steer the balloon All he could do was use the trapped heat to propel it up and downto catch different currents of wind. He had to be attuned to the subtle changes, the variance in pressure - but if there wasnt a breeze to follow, there wasnt much he could do. I checked my Instagram, I texted a few friends. I took a selfie with the one whod joined me. Then I drifted off into silence, a rarity for me. I felt calm and still. From the ground, the hot air balloons seemed majestic and even terrifying - the fires burning against the dawn sky, the balloons hovering in the breeze. But up in the air, in that stillness, I felt serenity, an intangible lightness. When up in the air, the fire was covered, the world was silen t. The crowd of overa hundred thousand people assembled below felt light-years away. Maybe, to transcend, we need to just float, to trust, to just exist, in stillness. I was reminded of the final words in the memoirWild, when Cheryl Strayedfinally attained enlightenment after a grueling hike of the Pacific Coast Trail How wild it was, to let it be.Of course, moments later, when we crashed to the ground, I nearly forgot this enlightenment entirely. But as I tumbled out onto the dirt and reflexively checked for my phone, I remembered the stillness from moments before. Such meditative silence is hard to come by these days.Maybe we do need to go up, up, and away to find it again. The article was originally published on Brit + Co.

Theres now a word for when you panic over phone separation

Theres now a word for when you panic over phone separationTheres now a word for when you panic over phone separationWeve all experienced it. You left your phone at home or you forgot to bring it on your coffee run.At first, you think, Ill be fine. There was a time when I lived life without a small computer in my pocket at all times. But then the panic starts to set in. What if you are missing an important work email? Or a text from a friend? Or even more importantly, a new photo from that annoying girl you went to high school with who is now a mommy blogger. Suddenly you find yourself drenched in sweat and literally Tom Cruise-running back to wherever your phone is, pushing small children and nuns out of your way.Well there is now a name for this feeling and it is called nomophobia and dont worry, you arent alone (but still a little sad.) In fact, nomophobia is The Cambridge Dictionarys word of the year. It was chosen overgender pay gap, ecocide and no-platforming byCambridge Diction ary users.Nomophobics uniteAnd it isnt just the Brits.Pew Research reportedin 2017 that 77% of adults the U.S. say theyre smart phone owners, compared to a mere 35% in 2011. Forty-six percentof smartphone owners said their smartphone is something they couldnt live without.Their votes tell us that separation anxiety isnt just about what young children feel when separated from their parents any longer. Its now also about the intimate - and often dysfunctional - relationships with our smartphones.Andnomophobiagives a name to this anxiety,Wendalyn Nichols, Cambridge Dictionary publishing manager, said in a statement about the announcement. If you are looking to do a digital detox over the holidays, here are some tips.

What to Do When You Need Faster Results at Work - The Muse

What to Do When You Need Faster Results at Work - The MuseWhat to Do When You Need Faster Results at Work Your deadlines one week away and theres no way youre going to hit your goal. And its all because the results you need arent in yet- because of a client, or delayed data, or your own timeline being unrealistic. Anyone whos ever been about to miss a target or goal knows how much it sucks to inch closer and closer to that deadline- knowing theyre going to fail at what they set out to do (or more realistically what their boss asked them to do). Before you panic, walk yourself through the following steps 1. Determine How Much of the Stress Is Coming From You- and How Much Is Coming From Your BossYoure an incredibly motivated professional- and if I were to take a guess, there are times when you put a lot of pressure on yourself. When that happens, self-imposed deadlines start appearing on your to-do list, even though your manager has a much different idea in mind. Take a deep breath an d figure out where this deadline pressures coming from. If its self-imposed, Im going to suggest something radical Give yourself a break. The only person whos bearing down on you is, well, you. So if there isnt a hard deadline, dont feel the need to add extra pressure to your own to-do list. But if you have a target from your company or your boss to hit, things arent quite as simple. Thats not to say youre not working hard, but it does indicate that you need to continue reading2. Figure Out if There Are Any Changes You Can MakeIll be honest. Sometimes I think Im trying everything possible to get the results I need- only to realize that I keep relying on the same tactics, with slightly different spins. Sound familiar? Thats why its important to take a minute to re-evaluate your methods and figure out if you can do things a little differently. Maybe you need to re-organize your to-do list for this project (or if youre completely disorganized, maybe its time to get organized, period). M aybe theres a knowledge gap you didnt know you have and you need to take a step back. Maybe you need to ask for help. Whatever the case may be for you, be honest with yourself about how you can shift gears in reservierung to get what you need. 3. Communicate Whats Going on to Everyone InvolvedThis part is often one of the most difficult for self-starters like you. Not only is it important to figure out what needs to change for your sake, but you also need to get everyone else it affects up to speed.Call a meeting (or send an email) to the appropriate people and give them a status update. But wait- dont approach this as a plea for an extension or additional help. Bring your adjusted timeline, and if relevant, proposed solutions as well. Not only does it make it much easier for everyone else to chime in with suggestions, but it also shows them that even though you feel that youre behind, youre doing everything in your power to catch up as quickly as possible. At some point, everyone f aces the challenge of fighting through obstacles to hit a goal. Even though youre good at your job, youll likely find yourself struggling to figure out why your progress has stalled. While you might not be seeing results as quickly as you (or your boss) would have liked, you can still totally rebound.

The reason more Millennials are moving home is not what you think

The reason more Millennials are moving home is not what you thinkThe reason more Millennials are moving home is not what you thinkMillennials (aged 23 to 39) have earned the nickname of the Boomerang Generation because a significant number have gone back home to live with their parents after graduating from college and even living on their own and being in the workforce for a few years. Now, fruchtwein stereotypes would have you believe that most 20 and 30-somethings that move home do this because they are lazy, unemployed (think Will Ferrell in Wedding Crashers, Step-Brothers and a bunch of others) and know that having your mom do your laundry regularly is one of the greatest things in the world. But it turns out, that is actually not the reason most Millennials move back into their childhood bedrooms (and curl up in the fetal position.) The real reason is actually even sadder.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisf action, Neuroscience, and moreAccording to a Homes.com survey of over 1,000 Americans who moved back in with their parents, the most common reason Millennials boomerang is because of a divorce or breakup. Cue the sad face emoji. The survey found that good old fashioned heartache was the primary reason for moving back home for 33% of 26 to 30-year-olds, 37% of 31 to 35-year-old and 24% of 36 to 40-year-olds.Even though Millennials have been labeled as the generation that has killed the divorce rate, it clearly still happens. Plus, even though Millennials are getting married later they are cohabitating with their significant other that they are not married to at higher rates than ever before. The number of cohabitants in the U.S. increased by 29% between 2007 and 2016, according to a study from the Pew Research Center. Of those 18 million cohabiting half of them are under the age of 35 AKA Millennials. Patricia McManus, an associate professor of sociology at Indiana University, told Bu stle of this new trend, Most young adults, most millennials, will certainly live together before marriage, she said. Its become more of a norm with less of a stigma. In addition to it cutting down on living expenses, it is also a good way to test out whether the relationship is compatible with marriage. And lets remember, though the breakup may be just as painful, it will still cost less than a divorce (and you can tell yourMommy all about it when you move back home.)As for the reason across all age groups that many people move back in with their parents issaving money for a house or purchase followed by breakups.Joblessness and debt were also other reasons that were cited.Something else to note is that 45% of those that move back home live in their childhood bedrooms which has gotta be weird. Interestingly, 22% pay rent to their parents. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, s tudy finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Why you shouldnt quit working immediately if you win Powerball

Why you shouldnt quit working immediately if you win PowerballWhy you shouldnt quit working immediately if you win PowerballOn Wednesday night, aPowerball prize drawing took place, and one lucky person beat the 1-in-292-million odds and found themselves $700 million richer. Mavis Wanczyk, 53, of Chicopee, Massachusetts, had the lucky ticket. As one of Wanczyks first actions as a multi-millionaire, she quit her job, telling her employer, Mercy Medical Center, that she wouldnt be coming back. The lottery prize was the second-largest jackpot in Powerball history - and if no one had won, the jackpot would have been $1 tausend milliarden by Saturday. That wouldve been the biggest amount in lottery history. In 2015, a rule change increased the possible numbers players can pick from, and since then, the difficulty of winning has increased along with the games purse sizes.$700 million dollars isaround $293 million after taxes. Its an incredible amount of money fruchtwein of us can only dream of having. You may suddenly be rich enough to make it rain dollars and buy that house or that island, and never lift a hand again to work again. Wanczyk chose to quit her job right away- but should you?Dont do anything rashYour impulse after winning the lottery may be to toss your spreadsheets in the air, and walk out of your office in dramatic fashion, but what most lottery experts agree is that winners shouldnt make any rash decisions. Winning such a large amount of money can be a stressful, overwhelming situation where you act on impulses, instead of acting with your head. One thing I would tell people not to do is make rash decisions like quitting your job, going and buying a new house or a bunch of debt obligations, John Mabary, a Sherman financial advisor, said. Theres going to be plenty of time for that and think through what you want to spend money on.Not quitting right away also helps protect your privacy and not raise any suspicions about your sudden wealth. Once people kno w youve won a million-dollar lottery, family, friends, and strangers will come out of nowhere asking for their cut. Too many lottery winners have met tragic fates after they were taken advantage of, and in some extreme cases, even murdered, for winning a lottery. To avoid these endings, money experts advise hiring a financial advisor immediately and keeping the number of people who know you won very small. The Sudden Money Institute advises keeping the circle of people who know very low just one person.Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban even advises Powerball winners to hire a tax attorney first before doing anything else or talking to anyone you know. Not quitting your job not only helps you fly under the radar as you plan your future cabana-filled getaway in peace, but you may also discover that you dont want to quit working. Sitting on the beach is fun for a while, but it isnt enough to keep most people going. A 2014 CareerBuilder survey found that 51% of us would want to continue w orking even if we won the lottery. The majority of people surveyed said they would be bored if they didnt work and that working gave them a sense of purpose and accomplishment. That makes sense. As we know, we spend one-third of our lives working.Work is a key parte of our identities, giving us purpose, meaning and structure to our days.As Cuban advises, winning a lottery gives you financial security, but it wont give you everything If you werent happy yesterday you wont be happy tomorrow. Its money. Its not happiness.

67% would consider quitting if their work situation became less flexible

67% would consider quitting if their work situation became less flexible67% would consider quitting if their work situation became less flexibleFlexibility and choice over their hours, workspaces, and where they will work are the hot-button issues in todays office.Workers prioritize flexibility in their working hours and especially value the ability to choose work-from-home arrangements, the 2019 Staples Workdistributionspolitik Survey found. Theyre even willing to quit a job if their work-from-home agreement changes.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreNearly 90% of the 1,001 office workers surveyed believed more flexibility in work arrangements and schedules would increase morale. However, only 34% of their employers actually had work-from-home policies in place.Still, people found a way to work around those lack of policies 64% of employees said they worked remotely at least so metimes.Being open to remote working situations and policies is super important, Chris DeMeo, Vice President, Staples Brand Group, told Ladders. Still, he cautions that rules should be put in place. If youre a company who is doing that, I think its good to have a formal policy in place so that theres a common set of expectations. For employers, providing flexibility is good business, as it influences employee retention 67% of employees would considerleaving their jobif their work arrangements became less flexible.Open offices still an unpopular choiceOpen offices remain a bummer 52% of respondents said an open office layout was full of distractions. Forty-percent reported that their office space was justtooopen.Workers wanted work-life balance and a healthier (and less noisy) life at work.Work is no longer a formal or physical place, said DeMeo. What happens at work impacts what happens outside of work. Operating more holistically within that context is important especially as we con tinue to see very much a candidates market. To be attractive to the best talent, and to retain top talent, we need to be operating with that mindset.Flexibility and choice the two things workers craved can be enabled inside the workplace by changing the physical workspace, said DeMeo. The wide-open office could stay, allowing for collaboration, but also be adapted to give workers quiet spaces and room to breathe.Creating workspaces that allow people the flexibility to work collaboratively and effectively in more of an open environment, but then also giving them the choice and the flexibility when they need dedicated focus time to have an identified space where they can sit down and really focus on a task. Theres been a pretty strong pullback against wide-open workspaces. So having the flexibility for the way I need to work today with what my work environment provides is an important element of choice for employers to consider for their employees.Overall, as the surveys respondents indicated, employers are doing something very well, and lagging behind in other areas.Employers are doing the best at acknowledging they need to change, said DeMeo.The lag is in the creation is in workspaces designed for the modern way of work flexible workspaces. I also think theres a lot of progress that needs to be made around being inclusive and supporting employees that may have a disability. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to quit bad habits without willpower 3 secrets from neuroscience How to quit bad habits without willpower 3 secrets from neuroscience Got any serious bad habits? The extra-strength ones with the FDA warning. The kind you really beat yourself up about - but still engage in all the time?Procrastination that screws up the quality of your work? Epic tidal waves of laziness? Or cardiac-threatening levels of overwork? Snapping at the ones you love? Or not speaking up even when you know you should? We’re going to turn everything you know about bad habits on its head. For starters, here’s the good news: you’re not lazy, you’re not a screw up, and you’re not a bad person. In fact, you don’t actually have “bad habits” at all. Those tempting or nagging voices in your head aren’t evil. Actually, they’re trying to  help  you.Yeah, I know: I have a lot of ‘splaining to do. But before it all makes sense, we’ll need to wade into a bit more crazy. Pixar films, neuroscience, multiple personalities, mindfulness, “Fight Club”, and boatloads of you talking to yourself like you’re nuts…Yes, weird, but tot ally legit. In fact, there’s a whole system of psychology based around this:  Internal Family Systems  (IFS.) It’s been shown to help people with everything under the sun from  depression, to anxiety, eating disorders, addictions, and even some of the most serious stuff like PTSD.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! From  Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual:In the IFS Complex Trauma Study, only one subject out of 13 still qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD after finishing 16 weeks of IFS therapy. This is a system that can help you overcome almost any bad behavior, deal with deep-seated issues and even help you love yourself a bit more. We’re going deep here. Warning: we’re entering “the therapy zone.” It’s gonna get touchy-feely and a little awkward. I’m often skeptical of this kinda stuff myself. But when something works, it works.Alright, hold my inner child’s hand and we’ll do this together. Let’s get to it…You’re not lazy, weak, or awfulI posted recently about “the modular mind.” Basically, this is the theory that there is no singular “you.” There are many different selves inside you that take turns running the ship and that’s why human behavior (including yours and mine) can be so random and frustrating.  When you say, “I wasn’t myself” that’s far more accurate than you ever thought.(I’m not going to rehash the entire theory because regular readers would rise up and slay me for repeating myself. If you want the  full  scoop, click  here.)There are many different yous in your head. William James was saying it back in the 19th century, and now every major division of psychology is on board with this idea, including neuroscience. From  The Body Keeps the Score:Michael Gazzaniga, who conducted pioneering split-brain research, concluded that the mind is composed of semiautonomous functioning modules, ea ch of which has a special role. In his book The Social Brain (1985) he writes, “But what of the idea that the self is not a unified being, and there may exist within us several realms of consciousness? . . . From our [split-brain] studies the new idea emerges that there are literally several selves, and they do not necessarily ‘converse’ with each other internally.” MIT scientist Marvin Minsky, a pioneer of artificial intelligence, declared: “The legend of the single Self can only divert us from the target of that inquiry. . . . [I]t can make sense to think there exists, inside your brain, a society of different minds. Like members of a family, the different minds can work together to help each other, each still having its own mental experiences that the others never know about.”I know what some of you are thinking:And, yes,  Inside Out  *is* based on this research. (In fact,  Dr. Frank Anderson  acted as a consultant to Pixar during the making of the film and wrote one of the books I read to prepare for this post.)So how does this relate to bad habits?  You don’t have “bad habits” - you have different selves with different goals in your head, all trying to do what they think is best for the greater “you.”The problem is they’re not always right about what’s best and the goals of Self 1 may conflict with the goals of Self 2. (Paging Tyler Durden. Tyler Durden please come to the front desk.)IFS therapists refer to the different “yous” as “parts.”From  Self-Therapy:Parts are entities of their own, with their own feelings, beliefs, motivations, and memories. It is especially important to understand that parts have motivations for everything they do. Nothing is just done out of habit. Nothing is just a pattern of thinking or behavior you learned. Everything (except for purely physiological reactions) is done by a part for a reason, even though that reason may be unconscious.Through this lens, I see bad habits as an “autoimmune d isorder of the mind.” And with that, crazy as it may sound, things actually start to make a  lot  more sense. How can you procrastinate  and  feel guilty about it at the same time? Two different “yous” disagreeing. Part of you is afraid of being a loser and wants to accomplish things - but another part of you is afraid of being all stressed out and wants to watch Netflix and eat popcorn. Neither is “lazy.”(It might also explain how a blogger’s ex can have both fear of abandonment  and  fear of intimacy, but that’s a story for another day, Bubba.)You need to understand what other-you is trying to accomplish and find a better way to address the underlying need so you can both get on the same page.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my new book  here.)So who are these other selves? When it comes to problematic behaviors, there are three flavors we need to be concerned with…Exiles, managers and firefightersWe all have fears. And we try to cop e with those fears. And by “we” I mean the “we” in your head.  Allow me to introduce the cast of characters that are causing the “problems”:Exiles:This is the annoyingly dramatic name that therapists give to the seat of your deep, dark fears and long-held negative beliefs. “I’m stupid.” “I’m a failure.” “I’m unlovable.” “I can’t trust anyone.”Yup, this is the “inner child.” (It might be the first time you’ve heard the term in a non-mocking context. I mean, I’m going to mock it  plenty  because it’s a corny term, but this is its more proper usage.)Bad stuff happens to us and we take away painful lessons that we don’t let go. And these fears often unconsciously guide our actions in frustrating ways.Managers:So how do you still manage to function with those fears? Well, the inner child has an overprotective parent.  These are “Managers.” That nagging voice in your head. It says you’re not working hard enough. That you’re weak. Th at you need to do more. That the world is going to end if you don’t make everyone happy and live up to expectations. It thinks if you gave in to the fears of the inner child you’d be paralyzed, so it harasses you endlessly and occasionally steers “you” to behave in ways that aren’t aligned with your goals. From  Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual:We call proactive parts “managers” because they try to manage our lives in ways that keep emotional pain out of consciousness. They often focus on motivating us to improve, work hard, be productive and be socially acceptable. At the extreme, however, these aims can devolve into tactics like perfectionism, intellectualizing, one-sided caretaking, obsessing about appearance, conflict avoidance at great personal cost and trying to control or please others. At times, this is useful. You  do  need to go to work when you don’t feel like it, or you’ll lose your job and be miserable. Then again, Managers may also nag you to keep working until you pass out - also making you miserable.Managers still see you as an irresponsible child and feel you wouldn’t wear clean underwear if they didn’t remind you 50 times a day.Firefighters:Sometimes the Manager doesn’t do its job well. Or you just don’t listen. And the Exile’s fears get all wound up. Maybe the Exile is terrified of losing its independence - always being told what to do and feeling disrespected. To prevent the Exile from totally freaking out, the “independence” Firefighter goes extreme to immediately solve the problem.  â€œDON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!” And you procrastinate by eating ice cream and playing video games. (The independence Firefighter is, unsurprisingly, perpetually 15 years old.)From  Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual:(Firefighters) share the same goal as managers; they want to exile vulnerable parts and extinguish emotional pain. However, (firefighters) are emergency response workers. They get activated after the fact, when the memories and emotions of exiles break through despite the repressive efforts of managers. (Firefighters) tend to be fierce and use extreme measures that managers abhor, like alcohol and drug abuse, binge eating, excessive shopping, promiscuity, cutting, suicide and even homicide. You’ve got fears, whether they’re remaining independent, or not being liked, or not feeling like a failure. The Managers try to solve them in one way. And when things really go south, the Firefighters try to solve them in the most immediate, extreme way possible. They’re all trying their best - but they’re not always effective. So this dysfunctional family is fighting in your head and your behavior looks like a chaotic mess because you’re not even conscious of the conflicting goals everyone has.You can’t “banish” any of these three so we gotta get them on the same page. That means keeping the Firefighters calm, getting the Managers to trust you, and figuring out what the Exile really needs to feel secure.(To learn the seven-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, click  here.)Alright, Dr. Jekyll, get everyone in the car. We’re going to therapy…1) Get calmSit down somewhere quiet. Take a few deep breaths. Relax. You want to be chill, centered and accepting. Why? Because you want to make sure you’re  you. Getting emotional is what signals the Manager to start nagging or - even worseâ€" the Firefighters to start whacking at the front door with axes. Now think about the primary “bad habit” or issue you’re dealing with. Picture the “Manager” behind it: Is it an overprotective parent that pushes you to work too hard? Or a slacker that’s always tempting you to procrastinate? A nagging perfectionist voice that says you’re never smart enough or beautiful enough? Or a critical voice that tells you not to trust people? (To learn the 3 secrets from neuroscience that will make you emotionally intelligent, click  here.)Take a second and imagine that voice as a real, full-blown person. Because you’re about to have a conversation with them.Look, I  told  you this was going to get weird…2) Talk to them…um, I mean, youYes, you’re going to talk to yourself like you have multiple personalities. Because, well, you do. It’s not quite as odd as you think, really.Research shows talking to yourself can  make you smarter,  improve your memory,  help you focus  and even  increase athletic performance. And talking to yourself in the second person (saying “you” instead of “I”)  makes a difference:Altogether, the current research showed that second-person self-talk strengthens both actual behavior performance and prospective behavioral intentions more than first-person self-talk.Beyond that, we’re talking about “bad” behavior here. You need to get your ego out of the way. It’s a lot easier t o honestly answer questions about bad habits you aren’t proud of when you can ask “someone else” why “they” do that instead of why “I” do that.So play along.  Stay relaxed. Don’t try and get this voice that’s been bothering you to go away. We want to hear what they have to say. Be curious and compassionate, not all judgy. Remember: they’re just trying to help (in their annoying, ineffective way.)Ask them questions. A few good ones are: What’s your role in my life? What are you trying to protect me from? And the big money question: What are you afraid would happen if you didn’t do this job anymore? How would that Manager respond?  Really inhabit the role. It’s not that hard - you’ve probably been hearing this voice in your head for years. A “Procrastinating Manager” might reply with something like this:My role in your life? I have to make sure you relax and don’t get all stressed out about work. I’m trying to protect you from treating every project at the office like a life or death scenario. If I didn’t do my job you’d be a basket case. So I encourage you to have some fun on the internet and play with your phone to relax. And, frankly, you treat me like some slacker when all I want is to make sure your head doesn’t explode from stress.Accept and acknowledge what they say to you. Don’t get in an argument with yourself (although, from my perspective, that would be really funny.)If you feel like you understand one another, next you want to ask for permission to talk to the Exile. Yeah, this is odd. Like some sort of therapy  séance. But it works.  That Manag er’s voice has been chattering at you for years. It’s a person. If you don’t give it some respect, you’ll just get more stress.(To learn the 4 rituals from neuroscience that will make you happy, click  here.)Did you get permission? Okay, here’s where it gets really interesting. And weird. But interesting…3) Talk to the exileMeet your inner child. Aren’t they adorable? They look like you but smaller and probably scared out of their wits - which is why you’re here. You know what the Manager is doing to achieve its goals, whether that’s making you work too hard, not work enough, or occasionally screaming at the people who love you most. So now we’re getting to the meat.Ask the kid what they’re afraid of. Inhabit the role. What fear is so powerful that this kid actually has  employees  running around to protect him?Be gentle. If the kid (and, again, that’s  you) gets worked up, you may have those Firefighters smashing your windows as you go all emo and need to sp end the evening on the couch eating ice cream and watching reruns of your favorite tv show. So stay calm. Be gentle. And listen:I’m afraid of failing. Doing the work makes me think about it not turning out well. And then I’ll be a loser and no one will like me.So you know what the kid’s afraid of. And why the Manager does what it does to protect them. And so rather than a failure of willpower, you know why - deep down - you’re engaging in those “bad habits.”The kid’s fears might be totally extreme or unfounded. But they’re your fears. And you’re acting on them. So, in that sense, they’re real and need to be taken seriously. Don’t dismiss anything. You want to start addressing these underlying concerns that your inner rugrat has. Fix those and the bad habits take care of themselves. Assure the kid and the Manager that you’re going to work on this. You’ll make a plan. That you’ll be accountable. Maybe even involve a friend.Sound ridiculous? What’s ridicu lous is endlessly trying different ineffective ways to stop procrastinating when you could be addressing the underlying issue. If you get rid of the fear, the Manager (let alone the Firefighters) don’t need to do their jobs anymore and they go away. (Or maybe your mental HR department reassigns them to another role like making you unable to get a song out of your head. Who knows.)Of course, if you’re dealing with  extremely  serious issues you want to do all this with a therapist, not off a blog post written by some random guy on the internet. I hope that’s obvious but I have an internal Manager with a law degree who insisted I type it because my own inner child’s deep-seated fear is getting sued. You don’t need willpower or more self-control or discipline. You need to get to know yourself a little better. So ask. And listen. And you’ll be amazed what you’ll tell yourself.(To learn the six rituals from ancient wisdom that will make you happy, click  here.)Okay, your tim e in therapy is up. Let’s do a quick review and find out the best part about talking to Managers, inner children and the rest of the circus in your noggin…Sum upHere’s how to quit bad habits without willpower: There are no bad habits, just different selves with conflicting goals: You can read  this post  for more, or you can go watch  Inside Out. (One of these is a far more effective option. The other was written by me.) Exiles, Managers and Firefighters: The three big categories of voices in your head. Exiles have deep-seated fears, Managers make sure those don’t get triggered, and when they do get triggered, Firefighters put out the fire (and destroy your house in the process.) Stay calm and talk to the Manager: Find out why they do what they do by asking… well, you. Talk to your inner child: I’m cringing that I typed that. But, corny as it sounds, it really does help. Discover your fears. That’s what’s driving your “bad behavior.” This won’t be quick. It won’t be easy. I have oversimplified the process because some people are already whining that this post is too long. (Whatever. They only read the “Sum Up” anyway.)You probably have multiple Exiles, and a bunch of Managers and a squadron of Firefighters - complete with their own adorable Dalmatian. (You don’t need to have a conversation with the Dalmatian, but if you’re feeling really creative you may mentally pet him.)Understand what’s really driving your behavior and you can really fix your life. Find out what your fears are.  Get to the root of the issue and you won’t need 37 new ineffective lifehacks every week. (Did I just put myself out of a job? Crap.)You hear a lot about “knowing yourself,” “loving yourself” and “being your own best friend.” Those sayings are warm and fuzzy. They’re also vague platitudes that you have no idea how to actually get started on. Well, we just changed that. There are multiple yous. You can get t o know them by talking to them, as awkward as the process may be. And instead of rejecting nagging or tempting voices, you can befriend them, because as misguided as their actions are sometimes, they really do want the best for you. From  Self-Therapy:Loving yourself really means loving each of your parts. Prepare to be Quizzed The Job Assessment

Prepare to be Quizzed The Job Assessment Prepare to be Quizzed The Job Assessment The growth of pre-hire job assessment tests and what job seekers can expect Pre-hire screening tests are not new. They’re a common presence in big-box stores, where job applicants sit at a little booth near the front door for a quick test to determine if they’re suitable even to apply. The technique is not typically associated with $100K+ jobs - but that is changing, said analysts and vendors who make the software behind the tests.Employers are beginning to mandate applicants take an online pre-hire assessment test as they submit their resume, and it can determine whether your resume even makes it to Step One of the application process, said Lisa Rowan, program director of HR, Learning and Talent Strategies for the analyst firm IDC.Pre-hire assessment tests examine your skill level and whether or not you would fit into the cultural and ethical environment of the employer. It measures your answers against what the employer has defined as the profile of an ideal employee in that position. The test is psychometric, testing personality and style as opposed t o skills. It’s also subjective, Rowan said; for a sales position it may reflec t a particular sales style a given employer might prefer and assess how a candidate thinks and behaves to determine if he would be a good fit.Rapid (and expensive) employee turnover rates motivated retailers’ embrace of pre-hire assessment tests, but its use has percolated upward into companies searching to fill higher-level sales positions, Rowan said.Shrinking human-resources departments and the surge in applicants have fueled demand for an early screening process, said Chris Forman, chief development officer and president of AIRS, a recruitment process outsourcing company owned by The Right Thing. “They have fewer HR managers in place - they get let go in this kind of economy,” he said.Kronos, a workforce management technology vendor, is one such technology, whose makers say it is now in high demand. In 2006 Kronos acquired Unicru, a pre-hire assessment software maker, and used the technology to build a pre-configured profile of sales associates. Most companies are still hiring revenue-driving sales positions, and the drain on human resources can take its toll.Passing the test There are no right or wrong answers on psychometric tests. For skills tests, job seekers can self-test using tools on Monster, for example. Otherwise, make sure you answer pre-screening questions accurately if you want your resume to make it into an employer’s ATS.” The game starts and stops with the screening questions,” Forman says. “If you answer those questions on the Web site wrong, or answer them right and you’re not what they’re looking for, your resume will get knocked out.”“There’s this belief that the resume is what will put you at the top of the list,” he said. “That’s the case in a number of companies, but more and more today, it’s those knockout questions that will tag you as qualified or unqualified.”

Dr. Karie Willyerd and 5 Ways to Stay Productive to Accelerate your Career in 2013

Dr. Karie Willyerd and 5 Ways to Stay Productive to Accelerate your Career in 2013 Dr. Karie Willyerd and 5 Ways to Stay Productive to Accelerate your Career in 2013 With so much to do and so little time, how can you handle it all without 1) having a complete meltdown from being stressed and overworked or 2) throwing in the towel in defeat? The time between now and 2013 is a crucial period because it most likely will affect how you jumpstart the new year. Dr. Karie Willyerd, VP of Learning and Social Adoption at SuccessFactors, talked with Recruiter.com about how workers can use this important time to accelerate their career growth in 2013. Check out Willyerd’s reasoning on the benefits of staying productive over the next couple weeks and tips to do just that: 1. What are the most common things that affect productivity during this time of year? Quite a few things affect end-of-year productivity, including the rush to complete goals due by the end of the year, quarter close for those in sales, holiday parties, personal and family obligations for celebrating the season, finding the perfect gifts, planning time off at the break, and thinking ahead to the new year and preparing for it.  Add to that shortened daylight hours in the northern hemisphere, weather challenges, and if youre a traveler, a battle at the airport with inexperienced fellow travelers, its no wonder theres an increase in depression around this time of year. 2. Why is it important to remain productive as each year closes? As any sales person will tell you, deals come together at the end of the quarter, and way more come together at the end of the year. Since everyone supports sales in one way or another, making sure those last few deals can get in under the wire can make a big difference in share price. Additionally, many companies measure performance on an annual basis concurrent with the calendar year. A common mistake managers make during performance review is only to remember your most recent accomplishments or really your most recent “screw up” so make sure to avoid this common issue by ending the year with a bang. 3. Do you recommend employees take any specific productivity courses? Two of the programs I think are especially good for productivity improvement are Take Back Your Life by McGhee Productivity Solutions and The Five Choices to Extraordinary Productivity by Franklin Covey. The first offers very practical tips for getting on top of your email and how to configure Outlook to manage the 100+ emails a day the average employee gets. The second offers great advice about choosing where and how to focus on the things that matter. 4. How can employers/companies help their employees remain productive during the end of the year/winter holiday season? First, avoid the things that squelch productivity, like impossibly unattainable goals - stretch is good, impossible is not- micromanagement, uncomfortable working conditions (heres a Scrooge take on that), and constant reminders of failures.  Do motivate people to close out the year with a bang, celebrate successes, and encourage them to give the final level of effort. 5. Is there anything else you would like to add? Some experts advocate that work is more like a sprint than a marathon. The end of year is a good time to decide how you will train for running a lot of sprints, with restorative periods between those sprints. The training for running sprints is different than the training for running marathons, and if you try and run at sprint speed for marathon distance, you wont make it. Take some time to plot how you will preserve and renew your energy for 2013 corporate sprints. Dr. Willyerds 2013 Employee Resolutions and Tips Look Back to Look Forward by Documenting Your 2012 Accomplishments Avoid the “recency mistake. A common mistake managers make during performance review is only to remember your most recent accomplishments or really your most recent “screw up” so make sure to avoid this common issue by looking back over the past year and documenting your accomplishments. Pulling together a good catalog of your successes in 2012 by looking through your emails, your calendar or your performance goals system and make sure you track the highlights from your year. Ask yourself how you contributed to the business?  What are your strengths and how did they extend your value within your company. Update Your LinkedIn Refresh your online presence and contacts. If you are not already on LinkedIn, take the time now to create your profile. Most organizations will not even consider you as a prospective employee without a LinkedIn presence. Most potential employers will use it to find out about you before the interview process and to do reference checks on you so you want to make sure it is in pristine condition and really maximize it for the job you want and highlight your unique skills. Link in with more people. I suggest people set a goal for themselves. For example, commit to linking in with 50 new contacts over the holiday break. Recruiters and companies make evaluations on how much you are willing to learn and how you work based on who and how many people you are connected to on LinkedIn. Make 2013 the Year of Twitter for Work Set up a Twitter account and when someone you admire says something great, start to reply. Start to build a little bit of a relationship that you would normally not be able to connect with live and build relationships that way.  If you are already on Twitter, consider setting up a second Twitter account just to monitor industry news in your field. This is a great way to access the top news in your industry. It’s a great way to make the news more digestible. Take Control of Your Email Set up rules and use tools to help you take back your productivity that is stolen by email. Get over the guilt of reading and responding to every email. The average person gets 100 emails a day and the average manager gets 150. If you become really focused on being responsive to every email you will never get caught up in it. In addition to setting up your own Outlook rules, look for productivity and enterprise social tools like Jam that allow you to share and connect directly with small teams in custom groups (private or public). Within groups it is easy to tag people with actions and filter your alerts. If you and your teammates all make a resolution to do this, it can really cut back on email traffic and save you a lot of time. Find the Right Mentor for You Take the extra time over the holiday break to identify the right mentor for you, but remember not to reach too far. Think about who you admire and reach out to them. I suggest people look for someone who is five to seven years ahead in his or her career at most because they can remember what is what.

Robots at Work Where Do We Fit

Robots at Work Where Do We Fit Robots at Work Where Do We Fit Robots at Work: Where Do We Fit? The robots are coming for our jobsand sooner than we think. Thats the gist of a number of recent reports by economists and technology researchers. For instance, nearly half of all U.S. jobs could be automated within a decade or two, cautions a study by an Oxford University economist and engineer. Smart machines will replace one in three jobs by 2025, warns technology research firm Gartner. Robots will perform 45 percent of all factory tasks by 2025, up from 10 percent today, blares Bank of America. We have been down this road before, other economists fire back. Two hundred years ago, English textile workers felt so threatened by power looms that they started smashing machinery. Worries like those of the Luddites also arose when mechanization scythed through farm hands, when automation first threatened factory workers, and when PCs began to eliminate secretarial jobs. Every time, productivity grew, the economy thrived, and employment rose. Why wouldnt that be the case today? Whats new is that algorithms are sensing things and reacting almost as well as a human would, said W. Brian Arthur, a visiting researcher at the Intelligent Systems Lab at Palo Alto Research Center, whose theories shaped our understanding of the high-tech economy. Were living in a world where, for the first time in human history, we can get a lot done, not just in manufacturing but in the service economy, extraordinarily cheaply and automatically. Algorithms have already eliminated millions of jobs among factory workers, video store clerks, travel agents, bookkeepers, and secretaries. Middle-skill occupations, which require more schooling or training than high school but less than a four-year college, fell from 60 percent of all U.S. jobs in 1979 to 46 percent in 2012. Similar declines occurred in 16 European economies. Algorithms running on interconnected computers have reshaped entire industries. Arthur points to the Blockbuster video chain: It doesnt employ fewer people, its gone. All the travel agents that populated Palo Alto have disappeared. Now algorithms are invading the skilled professions. Software is replacing some loan officers, attorneys, and sports and business journalists who write news. IBM is modifying its Jeopardy-winning Watson technology to diagnose diseases and read medical images. And engineers increasingly rely on expert systems to assess designs and simulations. In the past, when mechanization disrupted farming, laborers took on factory jobs. When factory employment flattened, workers moved into offices. Today, Arthur said, we dont have a sector that is growing fast enough to mop up those people who get laid off. ;custompagebreak; The Second Economy Five years ago, Arthur coined the phrase the second economy to describe a system in which Internet-enabled computers execute business processes once handled by people. Twenty years ago, for example, when we wanted to travel we called travel agents, who would ask where and when we wanted to go, query some proprietary databases (or even paper catalogs), talk us through our options, and book reservations. Today, we simply go online. This sets off a conversation among machines. Software gathers information about available flights. It charges our credit card, checks our preferences, reserves our seat, and sees if we qualify for a security clearance or lounge access. It adds our weight and baggage to the flight manifest, and orders additional fuel for the flight. Everything takes place within seconds, without any human intervention. Similar conversations are happening everywhere in the economybetween RFID tags and scanners at ports and warehouses, between television sets and servers that stream movies, and more. Were undergoing a digital revolution, a transformation of the economy comparable to the Industrial Revolution. The Internet of Things is creating masses of digital sensors, and they are going to generate masses of data, Arthur said. As new algorithms arise to make sense of the data, they will only strengthen the second economy. This transformation is already having a profound effect on peoples employment prospects. And its impact is growing because computers are getting smarter, quickly. Only a few years ago, for example, voice recognition worked in highly structured dialogues, where it expected certain types of responses. Today, Apples Siri and its competitors provide (mostly) relevant answers to unstructured questions. Some apps even translate languages on the fly. Autonomous cars show just how fast AI can evolve. In a 2004 DARPA challenge, the best car chugged only seven miles down a straight road. Three years later, six autonomous vehicles completed a 60-mile circuit through an abandoned military base among moving cars, pedestrians, and street signs. Their performance was not as good as a human. This led Silicon Valley entrepreneur Martin Ford to predict that AI was not likely to replace human truck drivers anytime soon. One year later in 2010, Google announced that its fleet of autonomous cars had logged 100,000 incident-free miles. Today, nearly every large auto company has an autonomous car program. This past May, Nevada granted the first commercial license ever to an autonomous truck. Ford, meanwhile, appears to have reconsidered the speed of change. He named his most recent book, Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future. Getting Smarter Faster According to Gill Pratt, who spearheaded DARPAs robot challenge and now heads Toyotas $1 billion robotics program, two emerging technologies will help robots learn even faster. The first is cloud robotics. In the past, memory and processor speed limited robots ability to learn. Today, robots can upload what they learn into the cloud. Once there, other robots could access instructions for everything from cooking chicken cordon bleu to performing surgery. What one robot knows, every robot can know. The second is deep learning, an advanced type of machine learning that allows robots to learn things that humans understand tacitly. Robots, for example, have trouble telling tables from chairs. Both may have the same number of legs, similar surface areas, and stand tall or short. Yet humans usually know where to sit and where to place their drinks. Deep learning tries to overcome this problem with algorithms that sort through vast amounts of data and come to their own conclusions. Google, for example, used deep learning software to scour YouTube cat videos and come to its own conclusions about what defined a cat. It used this algorithm to identify cats twice as well as any other image recognition software. It took Google only 16,000 computers and 10 million videos to learn to do this. Compared with even the youngest children, who know a cat when they see one, such results may seem pathetic. Yet Google learned enough from its experiment to improve its search engine, slash translation errors, and provide more relevant newsfeeds. Recently, a Google deep learning program, AlphaGo, soundly defeated the reigning European champion of the game Go, a feat that most AI specialists expected to take another decade. Pratt imagines a world where robots and distributed sensors would send data to the cloud. Deep-learning AI would then analyze the data and use it to make robots and other types of AI software smarter. In this way the combination of cloud robotics and deep learning could yield rapid advances in machine intelligence, and displace many workers in a very short time. This may already be happening. In 2011, Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee of MITs Sloan School of Management warned in their book Racing against the Machine about technologys potential for disruption. Building on Arthurs research, they noted that between 1947 and 2000, automation increased productivity, employment, and wages. Since 2000, however, U.S. productivity continued rising, but new job creation slowed and median income actually declined. They see smart machines at work. Its not so much a matter of jobs in general as specific types of skills being substituted for by new technologies. People with those skills see falling demand for their labor, so they will have lower incomes and less work unless they develop new skills, McAfee said. Typically, the easiest tasks to automate are routine and repetitive, such as classifying information, routing files, or operating a metal press. On the other hand, jobs for restaurant workers, janitors, and home health aides are growing. They require few skills, which keeps wages low, but they involve multiple tasks and human interaction that are difficult to automate. The true winners in the new economy have specialized skills and often use computers to amplify their knowledge and capabilities. They are the ones, for example, who create software to book the lowest fares or prepare taxes. Their companies may make billions of dollars, but their websites and software put hundreds of thousands of people doing routine jobs out of work. Two hundred years ago the Industrial Revolution replaced people and animal power with machines, Arthur said. Now we are developing a neural system to go with it. It is a huge and unstoppable transformation. ;custompagebreak; The Technology Job Machine Others are more optimistic. They believe that technology will spur employment, just as it always has. In 2015, three economists from international management consultant Deloitte defended that view in a paper, Jobs and People: The Great Job-Creating Machine, which was short-listed for the Society of Business Economists top honor, the Rybczynski Prize. Machines seem no closer to eliminating the need for human labor than at any time in the last 150 years, the authors wrote. The problem is that, while it is easy to point to jobs lost due to technology, it is not as easy to identify jobs created by technology, Alex Cole, one of the authors, said. Cole and his fellow researchers found those jobs by analyzing labor data going back to 1871. Some of their findings were not surprising. Machines replaced muscle on farms and in factories, while employment grew among people who create, implement, and maintain technology. Employment also rose for those with specialized knowledge. For example, Britains 1871 census recorded only 28,000 nurses. They held low-skilled positions closer to domestic service than medicine. With better training, the value of nurses increased and their numbers swelled to 300,000 in 2014. Demand also surged for service and caring jobs like hairdressers and bar staff. Cole attributes this to technology. Why? The ability of technology to raise productivity slashed the cost of many necessities, Cole said. In 1950, for example, food made up 35 percent of what the average Briton spent on essential goods and services. By 2014, foods share had fallen to 11 percent. Meanwhile, the real cost of U.K. cars fell by half over the past 25 years, while the U.S. cost of televisions plummeted 98 percent since 1950. Technology-driven price decreases give consumers more money to spend. Over the past 20 years, they increasingly spent it on health (think nurses), education (more teachers and teachers aides), and services that were once considered a luxury, Cole said. In 1871, for example, there was only one hairdresser per 1,800 people; today there are more than six. Because Britons can afford to go out more frequently, the number of bar staff has quadrupled since 1951. Other researchers have reached similar conclusions. Nevertheless, these studies can be misleading: If smart machines are truly game changers, then past trends and historical data say little about the future. For that reason, leading MIT labor economist David Autor looks instead at the inherent limitations of smart machines in an aptly named 2015 paper, Why Are There Still So Many Jobs? For example, why do robots install car windshields in factories, but humans repair them when they break, Autor asks. The answer is that robots require controlled environments, while humans, who are more flexible, can cope with unstructured tasks. That same adaptability is essential for medical technicians, plumbers, electricians, and many other middle-skill jobs. Autor is also underwhelmed by machine learning, finding it cumbersome and often riddled with surprising errors. Humans leave computers scratching their digital heads when it comes to identifying cats or not sitting on tables. Even IBMs Watson, which trounced the worlds best Jeopardy player, got one question spectacularly wrong, he noted. Asked which U.S. city named two airports for a military hero and a battle, it named a city in CanadaToronto. No one wants a self-driving car to make a similar mistake. Jobs on the Rebound? Although they disagree about the long-term impacts, nearly all experts agree that smart machines are creating a very different job market. Autor and like-minded optimists expect pressures on middle skill jobs to eventually reverse because these jobs combine not only knowledge, but also adaptability, problem solving, common sense, and the ability to communicate with other people. Many of the tasks currently bundled into these jobs cannot readily be unbundledwith machines performing the middle-skill tasks and workers performing only a low-skill residualwithout a substantial drop in quality, Autor has written. Businesses are already pairing human flexibility with mechanical precision. In 2012, for example, Amazon bought warehouse robot developer Kiva Systems. Kivas robots work alongside people, bringing shelves of parts to workers. The robots even use laser pointers to show workers which parts to pick, but only humans are flexible enough to rapidly manipulate and wrap parts for shipment Arthur is not as sanguine. The growth of the second economy is great for people plugged into the system or working with robots. Meanwhile, those without the right skills are finding it harder to secure good, full-time jobs. Its not just that weve lost jobs, but that the middle class has steadily lost hope that life would become better. In America, it was always taken for granted that the next generation would do better. Many people cannot take that for granted anymore, Arthur said. Its going to be a large social problem over the next 20 or 30 years, Arthur said. Well solve it, because as human beings we always solve our problems with new institutions and new types of arrangements. But until that day, it is not going to be easy. Alan S. Brown is associate editor at Mechanical Engineering magazine. Today, we don’t have a sector that is growing fast enough to mop up those people who get laid off.

Dont worry, Mourinho... Enhancv will help you find another club!

Dont worry, Mourinho... Enhancv will help you find another club! Dont worry, Mourinho... will help you find another club! Jose Mourinho is either a person you adore or someone you truly despise. There’s no middle ground. He has hundreds of achievements behind his back, but also some questionable moments in his career.Even if you are not a Chelsea fan, you can’t deny that he is one of the brightest and most entertaining people we’ve seen in professional football. Still, many were overjoyed seeing Jose go as he and Chelsea FC parted ways this Thursday, probably because they only see the arrogant and selfish part of him.For others, though, it is a huge loss: Mourinho has built a dynasty in every club he has been a part of, and has always followed his principles. Most importantly â€" he has always made us listen when he spoke, regardless whether you liked him or not.The real reason we created his CV is to remind the world who Jose Mourinho is. Not only his numerous cups, guinness records or coaching awards, but also his style, principles and the reason why he was sometimes that arrogant.Even though, w e are not Chelsea’s fans, nor do we always share his point of view, we are quite sure this guy deserves some respect for the things he’s done and the guts he had to express his opinion. Hope you enjoy it ?Download Jose Mourinho CV#RespectMou and thanks for entertaining us before, during and after your games. We’re looking forward to seeing which team you’ll lead next. FAAs Final Rule for Pilot Duty and Rest Requirements

FAA's Final Rule for Pilot Duty and Rest Requirements FAA's Final Rule for Pilot Duty and Rest Requirements In December 2011, the FAA established a final rule for airline pilot duty and rest requirements in an effort to combat the risks of fatigue in aircrews. This new regulation provides more stringent rest requirements and flight hour restrictions than were previously in place, a move that the FAA hopes will satisfy the public demands for safer flights. The final rule for flight  crewmember duty and rest requirements became effective on January 4, 2014. The Problem of Pilot Fatigue Pilot fatigue has always been an issue in the aviation world, but the topic has rarely been given much attention, probably because it is a difficult problem to measure and even more difficult to remedy. Fatigue affects people very differently. One person might tire before another. One pilot may function well on just six hours of sleep, while another requires eight to feel rested. In addition, a pilots choices and lifestyle are an essential factor in fatigue management. A pilot might be given a 12-hour period of rest, but may only spend five hours of that period actually sleeping. Other lifestyle factors that can affect fatigue include health, diet, and stress levels. Regardless of the variables involved in measuring fatigue, we do know that a lack of sleep causes certain errors. And in a weary economy, operators are trying hard to save as much money as possible. This means airlines are maximizing the work schedules of pilots, asking them to fly as much as humanly (and legally) possible. The NTSB Recommendations The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been making recommendations to the FAA regarding pilot fatigue since 1972, and the organization continues to find fatigue to be a factor in aircraft accidents. After a couple of significant accidents, like the Colgan Air  crash in 1992 which brought public attention to the fatigue problem, the FAA took action on the role of fatigue in commercial aviation operations. Here are some comparisons that highlight the differences between the old and new rules: General Rest Requirements Old Rule: Different rest requirements based on domestic, international and unscheduled flights.New Rule: No difference between types of operations; new rules apply to all. Fitness for Duty Old Rule: Unclear language regarding fit for duty as reported by pilots.New Rule: Pilot must sign a document affirming that he/she is fit for duty and the airline is required to remove the pilot if fatigue is reported. Flight Duty Period Old Rule: Flight Duty Period had limits, but did not account for circadian rhythm or number of flight segments.New Rule: Flight Duty Period has stricter limits based on the number of flight segments and the start of the duty day. Reserve Pilots Old Rule: Reserve pilots must be given at least 24 hours off in a 7-day period.New Rule: Reserve pilots must be given a rest period of at least ten hours. Flight Hours Old Rule: Flight hours are limited per day and per year.New Rule: Flight hours are limited per week, per month and per year. Rest Periods Old Rule: Rest period of at least nine hours, which can be reduced to eight hours.New Rule: Rest Period of 10 hours, with the opportunity for at least 8 uninterrupted sleep hours. The maximum flight time during the day is now nine hours, and eight hours at night. Flight Duty Period limits under the new rules range from nine to 14 hours, depending on how many segments are flown and the start time of the pilots duty day. Final Ruling for Rest and Duty Limits In the final ruling for pilot rest time and duty limits, the FAA acknowledges that these new rules alone will not solve the fatigue problem. However, a safety system approach in which the operator and pilots both assume responsibility for fatigue management was determined to be the best solution. With this new rule in place, the FAA is now implementing mandatory updates to each airlines Fatigue Risk Management Plan (FRMP). The FAA has also proposed a Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) option as a way for operators to meet the regulatory requirement for fatigue management. Ultimately, the pilot is responsible for the safety of the aircraft and needs to be aware of his or her fatigue threshold. All the regulations in the world wont change that, but the new regulations are a welcome change for those pilots whose schedules are maxed out, and who are facing fatigue from being overworked, task-saturated, and possibly burned out. Perhaps theyll be able to get some rest now.
